Ninth Letter Vol. 7 No. 2

Ninth Letter is an award-winning literary journal that UIUC designs and produces. This issue (vol 7, issue 2) thought of design elements as “distractions” from the written content. With that mindset, we removed those distractions, relocating them to separable supplements. In working on this issue, I collaboratively designed a fold-out fractal maze poster and display faces for the stories’ title pages.

This fractal maze was done as a commentary on the story “Amnesiac In The Maze.” This type of maze is the most complex and time consuming type there is. The idea is that each box represents a copy of the entire maze, so any time you “enter” a box, you then are one level deeper and need to go up a level before proceeding to the exit. Essentially, a fractal maze could take years to solve, which is reflective of the character’s dilemma in the story. More information about this issue can be found here.
